Rebel without a clue
There have been
many ways to express youthful revolt throughout history. It is a
necessary evolutionary procedure that a society must undergo to
reach a higher level of civilization. You could point to many Biblical
references as being the ignition point of rebellion, but I won't
delve into that now. This just isn't the proper forum.
From the Scots
and the English to when the French peasants beheaded King Louis
and family, revolution was quite bloody. So people thought up different
ways to express their dissatisfaction that weren't quite as fatal.
Americans didn't catch on to this concept for at least another century,
but when we did, it started the Industrial revolution. Society had
found out that revolution had taken on a new meaning, profit.
Soon we had
embarked into the Roaring 20's. With prohibition, a new hybrid of
rebellion was taking place, violence for profit. The old and the
new came together. It became fashionable to question authority.
We, as a people, were evolving again.
In the decades
that followed, quashed were depression and tyranny. Which lead us
to the 50 's. Youthful rebellion was at the forefront of societal
evolution. Rock and Roll, the sense freedom after World War Two
and The Cold War, fueled the feeling of restless abandon that led
us to a feeling of openness and experimentation.
In the sixties,
we had reached the peak. Assassinations, an unpopular war, rebellion
became a belligerent part of the American character. We questioned
everything. The populace felt power. Not even the president could
get away with actions that every other leader, up to that time,
had gotten away with.
In following
decades, a level of tolerance came over us as a people. There were
no more secrets. The information revolution has now taken hold.
So how has our children, the next generation, the ones who will
soon carry the torch, chosen to express themselves?
Butt cracks.
Were the 50's
had the greasers. The sixties had the hippies. We have butt cracks.
They're everywhere. Not just guys. Even young ladies, mothers of
tomorrow, have tattoos and open air butt cracks.
They pierce
their skin in every available place, tattoo what's left, and send
the belt industry into the toilet. This is what we spent centuries
of fighting the good fight to achieve? Good grief! I shudder to
think what's next. Get your tickets early. Devolution has begun.
